EPFO directs field offices not to arbitrarily reject applications for pension on higher wages

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation, vide circular no. e-1093398/3540, dated 23rd May 2025, has directed all field offices not to arbitrarily reject applications for pension on higher wages submitted by members, based on the judgment of the Honourable Supreme Court of India, dated 4th November 2022, in the matter of special leave petition (C) No- 8658-8659 of 2019.
EPFO head office has advised all field offices to ensure that the applications are processed strictly, adhering to the guidelines and instructions provided by the head office. Rejection should be based on substantial and justifiable reasons, and applicants must be given adequate opportunity to rectify minor deficiencies in their submissions. Employers and employees should be adequately facilitated to comply with requirements, thereby ensuring fair and efficient processing of applications.
These directions from the EPFO come after it received numerous complaints from its stakeholders regarding the rejection of applications due to minor deficiencies.
