EPFO Bengaluru guidelines on UAN allotment/activation via face authentication

Pursuant to the circular from the EPFO headquarters regarding the generation and activation of UAN using Aadhaar Face Authentication Technology (FAT) through the UMANG mobile app, the EPFO Bengaluru Central, vide circular no. EPFO/RO-BNG/(C)/F&A/2025-26/04, dated 30th July 2025, has released certain instructions for all establishments.

As per the circular, this facility covers both new and existing employees. Existing employees whose UAN is not activated can use Face Authentication Technology to activate it, and existing employees whose UAN is already activated can use Face Authentication Technology to re-authenticate or update the EPFO records, if required.

Steps for employees to generate and activate a new UAN:

1. Download and install the UMANG app and the Aadhaar Face RD app.

2. Go to the ‘allotment and activation’ section in the UMANG app.

3. Enter the Aadhaar number and the registered mobile number.

4. Provide consent and scan face using smartphone camera.

5. On successful authentication, the system generates and activates UAN instantly. The UAN is sent via SMS.

Steps for existing UAN activation:

1. Open the UMANG app and select ‘UAN activation’

2. Enter Aadhaar and mobile details; verify via OTP.

3. Scan face and complete activation. Confirmation is sent via SMS.

Steps for already activated UAN:

1. Use the ‘Face Authentication’ service in UMANG to re-authenticate your profile when needed.

The circular also outlines the following actions to be initiated by the employer:

1. Inform all employees, especially new joiners, about the new FAT-enabled facilities.

2. Facilitate adoption of the UMANG and Aadhaar Face RD apps for onboarding and UAN-related processes.

3. Cease manual intervention in routine UAN generation and activation where FAT is used.

4. Ensure administrative staff are aware of these digital provisions to guide employees appropriately.
