Aadhaar-based identification is now compulsory for accessing ESI benefits

The Government of India, Ministry of Labour and Employment, has released a circular dated 17th May 2026, mandating the use of Aadhaar-based identification/authentication for beneficiaries seeking ESI benefits as outlined in the Code on Social Security, 2020.
This notification has been issued in accordance with section 142 of the Code on Social Security, 2020. According to section 142 of the aforementioned code, employees, unorganized workers, and their dependents must verify their identity using their Aadhaar number in order to register, apply for benefits, access services, and receive payments (including EPF, ESIC, maternity benefits, compensation, gratuity, etc).
