Mandatory allotment & activation of UAN through UMANG App using Face Authentication Technology

Earlier, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation, vide circular no. WSU/MemberProfile/E-710137/2025-26/17, dated 8th April 2025, in its effort to simplify UAN generation and activation, had launched a system of UAN generation and activation using Aadhaar Face Authentication Technology (FAT) through the UMANG mobile App. AscentHR circulated an alert on the same on 10th April 2025.
Now, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation, vide circular no. WSU/MemberProfilePt1/E-965649/2025-26/22, dated 30th July 2025, has announced that, with effect from 1st August 2025, the allotment/generation of UAN shall be done only through the Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) in the UMANG App.
EPFO has also clarified that the existing process of generation of UAN through the employer will continue in respect of exceptional cases like international workers and citizens of Nepal and Bhutan.
To avail this facility, the only requirement would be to download the UMANG App and Aadhaar Face RD app from the Play Store. The facility can be availed by the members themselves using their smartphones without any intervention from EPFO/employer.
