Election holiday (Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Puducherry)

The Election Commission of India, vide circular dated 16th March 2026, has declared the schedule for the General Election to the Legislative Assemblies of Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry. The polling dates are as follows:

• Assam, Kerala, and the Union Territory of Puducherry: 9th April 2026 (Thursday)

• Tamil Nadu: 23rd April 2026 (Thursday)

• West Bengal: 23rd April 2026 (Thursday), and 29th April 2026 (Wednesday)

In light of this election, the Election Commission has emphasized Section 135B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and has announced that all electors who are employees of establishments and shops, including those operating on a shift basis, will be granted a paid holiday on the polling day in the constituency where the General Election for the Legislative Assembly is taking place. It is also clarified that electors working outside the relevant constituency will also be eligible for this paid holiday.
