where candidates accept job offers but do not show up on the joining date, is a growing trend across various sectors in India. Originating in the 90s within the IT sector, it&#8217;s now prevalent in banking, telecom, and beyond, affecting both junior and mid-management positions.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da938d2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"da938d2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Career Catfishing. Is it an old term couched in a new term or a new workplace trend? And what are the issues related to it? At ET Careers, we regularly decode emerging career terms. In our discussion with Murali Santanam, CHRO, Ascent HR Technologies Private Limited, we analyze this career trend and its implications.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>1.How would you define &#8220;career catfishing&#8221; in the context of recruitment or workplace practices?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Catfishing is recent terminology which indicates the behaviour of potential employees who have been offered a position and accepted the offer, but do not show up on the day of joining and with no information about rescinding the offer. This is not a new trend relating to just the Gen Z aspirants.<\/p>\n<p>This behaviour started in India with the advent of Software and IT organisations in the 90\u2019s, when talent pool shortage was high, with potential employers making offers more than the offer a person had. The pressure on software service companies to on-board employees for both body shopping and for software development work was so high in the 90\u2019s that potential employees would resort to shopping on counter offers after receiving one offer. From 2000 onwards, catfishing as this behavior is called became prevalent in all other sectors, especially with Banking, Telecom, Insurance and Professional Services organisations. In recent times, at least 25% of potential employees do not show up on the date of joining, with no information, even after accepting the offer.<\/p>\n<p>What is more grave in the last 5 years is this behaviour, which was prevalent with junior levels, has now permeated to mid-level manager positions too. It has also become industry\/sector agnostic.<\/p>\n<h5>2.<strong>Are there any internal or external statistics, reports, or case studies your organization can share to illustrate the prevalence of career catfishing?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Catfishing can be seen in at least 25% of the people to whom offers have been made and accepted, in both junior and mid-management roles.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>3.What challenges do you think career catfishing creates for employers or recruiters?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The challenges are clearly an impact on time to hire especially with the notice period in most organisations now being prevalent up to 2 and 3 months. The pressure on hiring therefore is a dire need to have back-up candidates and\/or offers. Unfortunately for hiring teams, job opportunities in the market and shortage of good talent pool does not offer the option of back-up candidates, since back-up can be initiated only after knowing that a candidate did not show up on the date of joining.<\/p>\n<p>The speed at which back-up candidates need to be presented is a big challenge for recruiters, because they need to restart the process from step one of sourcing, screening, shortlisting and interviewing all over again, which could take up to 3-4 weeks depending on the skill and level of the position, not to mention the actual loss in revenues to the company for up to 3-4 months until the replacement joins.<\/p>\n<h5>4.Which sectors are experiencing this the most?<\/h5>\n<p>While this trend started with Technology \/ Software and IT services organisations in the 90s, the economic reforms and the opening up of the economy with increasing FDI and global organisations setting up operations in India, the banking sector growth, telecom growth, retail sector growth and the overall increase in compensation combined with increased aspirations has resulted in this trend in almost all sectors. This increasing trend with the junior level potential employees, with mid-management joining the band wagon, has now exacerbated the challenge businesses and hiring teams have been experiencing.
