With over 600 million people below the age of 25, we have a unique opportunity to\u00a0build the workforce\u00a0that can power India\u2019s growth for decades to come. But a young population by itself is not an advantage. It becomes one only when young people have the skills, confidence, and opportunities to contribute meaningfully.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As someone who has spent years hiring, developing, and leading talent, I believe it is time we looked beyond the number of graduates entering the job market. The more important question is whether they are ready for the world of work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation today is not just about unemployment; it is increasingly about employability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across industries, employers continue to talk about the difficulty of finding job-ready talent. At the same time, thousands of graduates struggle to find opportunities that match their aspirations. These are not contradictory realities\u2014they are two sides of the same problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Unstop Talent Report 2024 found that nearly half of students are unsure whether they will find employment in their preferred field. That should concern all of us. Education is expected to build confidence. If students are leaving campuses with uncertainty about their future, we need to ask ourselves whether our education system is keeping pace with the changing needs of business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technology is changing the workplace faster than ever before. Artificial intelligence, automation, cloud technologies, cybersecurity, and data analytics are no longer specialised capabilities reserved for technology companies. They are becoming integral to almost every business function.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/publications\/the-future-of-jobs-report-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/publications\/the-future-of-jobs-report-2025\/\">World Economic Forum\u2019s Future of Jobs Report 2025<\/a>\u00a0estimates that while millions of existing jobs will evolve or disappear over the next five years, millions of new roles will also be created. The challenge is that these new roles will demand very different skills. Analytical thinking, digital literacy, adaptability, resilience, and continuous learning are becoming just as important as technical knowledge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where we need to rethink what education should deliver. A degree continues to matter. It provides the foundation. But it is no longer the finish line.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Employers today are looking beyond academic scores. They value people who can communicate well, solve problems, work collaboratively, learn quickly, and adapt to change. These are capabilities that cannot be developed through classroom instruction alone. They require practical exposure, industry interaction, internships, and opportunities to apply learning in real-life situations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercer.com\/insights\/talent-and-transformation\/talent-assessment\/indias-graduate-skill-index-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.mercer.com\/insights\/talent-and-transformation\/talent-assessment\/indias-graduate-skill-index-2025\/\">Mercer India Graduate Skill Index 2025<\/a>\u00a0echoes what many hiring leaders experience every day. While graduates possess sound theoretical knowledge, employers continue to see gaps in workplace readiness, digital capabilities, and practical application. Closing these gaps calls for much closer collaboration between educational institutions and industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The responsibility, however, does not rest with academia alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organisations also need to rethink how they build talent. It is unrealistic to expect educational institutions to produce graduates who are productive from day one without industry playing an active role in their development. The Deloitte Campus Workforce Trends 2024 report points to a growing shift towards skills-based hiring, stronger campus engagement, and structured\u00a0early-career development programmes. These are encouraging signs, but they need to become the norm rather than the exception.<br \/>Perhaps the biggest shift we need to make is in the way we think about learning itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a long time, we believed education ended with graduation. That assumption no longer holds true. The pace of technological change means that today\u2019s skills may become outdated much sooner than we expect. Learning has become a continuous process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is reflected in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/gr\/en\/issues\/work\/genz-millennial-survey-2025.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/gr\/en\/issues\/work\/genz-millennial-survey-2025.html\">Deloitte\u2019s 2025 Gen Z and Millennial Survey<\/a>, which shows that the vast majority of young professionals are investing time every week in building new skills. The message is clear: employability is no longer a one-time outcome of education but an ongoing process. The professionals who will succeed are those who remain curious, adaptable, and willing to learn throughout their careers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students therefore need to look at career preparation differently. Along with academic qualifications, they should actively seek internships, industry projects, certifications, and opportunities to build practical skills. Equally important are communication, collaboration, and problem-solving \u2013 capabilities that will remain relevant even as technology continues to evolve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As employers, we too must invest more consistently in developing early-career talent. Building capability cannot begin only after recruitment. It requires sustained partnerships with educational institutions, mentoring programmes, apprenticeships, and meaningful opportunities for young professionals to learn on the job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India has all the ingredients to become a global talent powerhouse. We have scale, ambition, and an\u00a0entrepreneurial mindset. What we need now is stronger alignment between academia, industry, and policymakers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The success of our\u00a0education system\u00a0should not be measured only by the number of degrees awarded or campuses established. Its real success lies in how many young people are equipped to build meaningful careers and contribute to the nation\u2019s growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our demographic dividend is an opportunity that cannot be taken for granted.
